What is a labyrinth? A labyrinth is an ancient pattern, often circular, found in many cultures around the world, with a single, winding path that leads to the center.
What is the difference between a maze and a labyrinth? A maze is meant to confuse, excite and actively engage the problem-solving part of your brain; a labyrinth helps to calm one’s mind, body and spirit through surrender and letting go. These are very different goals, processes and outcomes.
What are the benefits to walking a labyrinth? The labyrinth engages the body, mind and spirit through the focused attention needed to walk its twists and turns. Walking a labyrinth supports meditation, prayer and general well-being, and is often used for rituals. It can help release patterned behavior, thoughts and feelings. Mindfully strolling evokes your body’s natural relaxation response (the para sympathetic nervous system: “rest and digest”), which is the opposite of our stressed state (sympathetic nervous system: “fight, flight, freeze”). The relaxation response slows breathing and heart rate, and lowers blood pressure.
Is there a right way to use one? Since walking a labyrinth contrasts with our habitual patterns, we suggest you begin by walking slower than you normally do, and not interacting with others who may be walking. Then pay attention to what is going through your mind and how you are feeling with this different way of moving. See additional suggestions on the bottom of the Rental With Guidance page.
Does it help to have a guide? A skilled guide will help participants approach the experience with increased mindfulness, which can result in a richer and more meaningful experience.
